Getting WAXED!

by: Samantha Hain

Twilight heartthrob Robert Patinnson recently got waxed from head-to-toe, and it wasn’t in a 40-Year-Old Virgin, rippin’ and roarin’ kinda way. The wild –haired Englishman best known for his role as vampire Edward Cullen in the Twilight Saga is now a permanent, err…for the time being  at least, fixture at Madame Tussauds Wax Museum in New York City. And while throngs of hormonally charged fans are rushing to get a glimpse (or grope) of RPatz’s likeness, I just kinda find the whole thing creepy, especially since RWax looks like a scrawny, much less attractive version of the man he claims to be .

I have nothing against Madame Tussauds, even if they did spend hundreds of thousands of dollars replicating Rachel Ray. In fact, as a child of the 80’s and a fan of the movie Mannequin, I for one still marvel at how the power of love turned a plastic storefront model into a young Kim Cattrall, bouncy feathered hair and all. I’m also the same girl who embarrassingly enough posed with a life-size cutout of Brad Pitt at my local Blockbuster Video during the release of Legends of the Fall (I was in 6thgrade so cut me a break).

People love celebrities in any shape or form, even the kinds that melt under intense heat, such as the “Sullen Cullen,” as I like to refer to Pattinson’s not-so-lookalike. And I guess for most people a 5 second photo shoot with an inanimate object slightly resembling a movie star is as close as they will ever come to a Hollywood movie premier at the Kodak Center, which is why Madame Tussauds is an international institution like no other. Still, if I’m going to fork over $35.50 for a ticket to see Nelson Mandela, Angelina Jolie or the even Oprah, for that matter, those science projects better look like the real deal or else I’d ask for a refund and head to a boutique in SoHo where I can find my celebrities the way I like them…in the flesh!
